A Step Forward for Wrestling Analytics

To Unlock Wrestlers' Full Potential

To Save Time by Refocusing Video Analysis

Data for Wrestling

We Dove into Wrestling Data

Here's what we found when we dug into the deeper wrestling stats.

There are historical limitations and the current systems - TrackWrestling (OPC) and Flowrestling only focus on match outcomes.

This is a great start, but very limiting in terms of analytics

Data Unlocks Doors

Does Wrestling Deserve Great Stats?

Yes, and great stats will bring added visibility to our Sport

Data Science is an Art just like Wrestling

Wrestling is where force meets beauty - like doing ballet while someone tries to rip your head off.

Data (force) belongs in Wrestling (beauty)

We Took a Step Forward

Our Attempts to capture data from the existing systems eventually fell short, but we feel proud of what we accomplished and how far we got.

Where to go from here ?

Hopefully more options will emerge for deep diving into match action analytics.

For now - Wrestle Stat is amazing for match outcome analysis and a great site, including some fantasy stuff !!

Our Beginnings

How we started

The inkling of the idea started for me in high school. After I one the award for most reversals at our banquet, my teammates â€‹said yeah, but that's only b/c you suck at takedowns. I was like they were right. And, watching a few of my old videos, I definitely wrestled like it was jiu jitsu and conceding the takedowns and battling on the mat. You know, wearing them out from bottom, ala Thomas Gilman vs. Ethan Lizak.

When my son was wrestling I realized I could analyze a wrestlers effectiveness in a particular position and by period and started 3D Wrestler Stats to do the work for him and his high school team.

From there I started analyzing the wrestlers who would be considered Hodge Trophy Candidates and worked with a few college teams. What an opportunity and joy to work on this.
